چکیده

The Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) provides an unprecedented, uniform photometric data set for large samples of AGN discovered at other wavelengths, and also forms the basis to search for previously unknown, obscured AGN. We present the results of a highly efficient near infrared color-based AGN survey using 2MASS that has already discovered 485 new, red AGN and QSOs. The extrapolated surface density of the 2MASS red AGN is ~0.57 deg~ for Ks<15.5 mag. The ratio of Type 1 to Type 2 AGN among the newly discovered objects is 4:1, similar to proportions found in X-ray and deep ISO surveys, but the inverse of that found in IRAS surveys. The median redshift of the the new 2MASS red AGN sample is z=0.22, and all but three have z<0.7. The color distribution, polarization and X-ray properties data suggest that most of the 2MASS-discovered AGN are red because of obscuration by dust in and around their nuclei.

The Southern 2MASS AGN Survey: spectroscopic follow-up with 6dF

The Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) has provided a uniform photometric catalog to search for previously unknown red AGN and QSOs. We have extended the search to the southern equatorial sky by obtaining spectra for 1182 AGN candidates using the Six Degree Field (6dF) multifibre spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope. These were scheduled as auxiliary targets for the 6dF Galaxy Redshift Surve...

Are red 2MASS QSOs young?

We use photometric data from the Spitzer mission to explore the midand far-infrared properties of 10 red QSOs (J −K > 2, R −K > 5 mag) selected by combining the 2MASS in the near-infrared with the SDSS at optical wavelengths. Optical and/or near-infrared spectra are available for 8/10 sources. Modeling the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) from UV to far-infrared shows that moderate dust redde...

Red Active Galactic Nuclei in XMM-Newton/SDSS fields

In this paper we combine archival and proprietary XMM-Newton observations (about 5 deg) that overlap with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to explore the nature of the moderate-z X-ray population. We focus on X-ray sources with optically red colours (g − r > 0.4), which we argue are important for understanding the origin of the Xray background. Firstly, these systems constitute a significant fracti...

Optical Spectropolarimetry of Quasi-stellar Objects Discovered by the Two-micron All Sky Survey

Highly polarized QSOs discovered in the Two-Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) have been observed to determine the source(s) of optical polarization in this near-infrared color-selected sample. Broad emission lines are observed in the polarized flux spectra of most objects, and the polarization of the lines is at about the same level and position angle as the continuum. Generally, the continuum is b...

Host Galaxies of 2mass-selected Qsos to Redshift 0.3

We present and discuss optical imaging of 76 AGN which represent the 2MASS-selected sample for z<0.3, from a full list of 243. They are found to have dust-obscured nuclei, residing in host galaxies that show a high fraction (>70%) of tidal interactions. The derived luminosities of the AGN and host galaxies are similar to traditionally-selected AGN, and they may comprise some 40% of the total AG...
